Hello Guys! Someone pls help me to Evaluate my profile and advise how much shall i need to score in GMAT for IIMs and ISB
Occupation: Navigation Officer in Merchant Navy with 7+ yrs of work experience in Oil/ Product Supertankers.
Additionally , Holding chief officers license - Its a management level of exam conducted by Dg shipping
10th : 8.0 CGPA CBSE
12th : 81% PCM CBSE
Grad : 73% (i was among the top 5)
I belong from a very different background. Although, i have substantial Foreign work experience.
Currently i m scoring around 650 in mocks.
How much score in GMAT would help me fetch a seat in the B schools as mentioned above basis my profile.

You have a somewhat differentiated profile, but it's worth noting that over the past few years, ISB and the IIM one-year MBA programs have admitted a fair number of candidates from the Merchant Navy. So, while your background is unique, it may not be viewed as exceptionally uncommon by the admissions committee.
Your biggest strengths are your international exposure and industry experience. Position your post-MBA goals as a natural progression into operations or supply chain management, showing how your experience at sea has given you a strong foundation in logistics, operations, stakeholder coordination, and managing complex environments.
To remain competitive across ISB and the leading IIM one-year MBA programs, I'd recommend targeting a GMAT FE of 655 or above. A strong score, combined with a well-defined career narrative and compelling essays, will significantly strengthen your application.

- We would consider this a genuinely differentiated profile for ISB and the one-year IIM programs, particularly IIMA PGPX, IIMB EPGP, IIMC MBAEx, IIMK PGP-BL and IIML IPMX. Seven-plus years on oil/product supertankers gives you something many corporate applicants cannot replicate: international operations, high-stakes decision-making, multicultural teams, safety responsibility and significant people management. Your experience level is especially appropriate for IIMA PGPX, whose current cohort averages 7.5 years of work experience and includes Transportation & Logistics professionals.
- Academically, 8.0 in X, 81% in XII and 73% in graduation will not be the major issue, particularly since you were among the top five graduates. At this stage, the schools will care much more about professional progression and leadership. Your Chief Officer licence is also worth highlighting because it demonstrates that you have cleared a management-level professional qualification and progressed toward senior shipboard responsibility.
- If you mean the current GMAT, we would set 665-675+ as the practical target, with 685+ being particularly strong for IIMA/IIMB. IIMA's 2026-27 PGPX cohort averaged 652 on the current GMAT, so 675+ would put you comfortably above that benchmark. For ISB, we would be reasonably comfortable around 655-665 with an excellent application and much happier at 675+. There is no score that automatically “fetches a seat.” Once you are in a competitive range, the quality of the career story matters far more than another ten points.
- The biggest admissions opportunity is to translate Merchant Navy terminology into management language. Don't make the essays about navigation and vessel operations alone. Show crew/team size, cargo value or vessel scale, difficult voyages/incidents handled, stakeholders coordinated across countries, safety and operational decisions, training/mentoring responsibility and situations where you led under pressure. Merchant Navy candidates have successfully made transitions into top MBA programs when this leadership is communicated well. Two relevant reads are MBA for Merchant Navy Professionals and this INSEAD MBA experience of a Merchant Navy professional. - Finally, we would spend serious thought on the post-MBA goal before applying. Operations/supply-chain leadership, energy and O&G, shipping/logistics strategy, consulting, or broader general management can all be credible, but “I want to leave sailing and move to corporate” is not enough. With your background and a 675+ GMAT, we would consider ISB and the leading one-year IIMs very worthwhile targets, with the final competitiveness depending heavily on how convincingly you explain the transition from senior maritime operations into your intended shore-based leadership career.
