Age: 28 Sex: Male Race: Asian
Undergraduate (Canadian School top 2) GPA 3.4 Double Major: Economics and Biotechnology
PhD: Biochemistry GPA 3.6
Test Scores GRE: 1530/1600, GMAT: 740 IR:8
Work Leadership Experience:
Research Assistant (as part of my PhD): 5 years
- supervised junior PhD student
- conducted independent research
Consulting Lead/Project Manager 8 month:
I managed a team of junior consultants all with PhDs from elite schools. The work focused on management and strategy consulting for the biotech and pharmaceutical sector.
Healthcare Software development consultant:
1 yr, manage junior analyst and interface with clients to develop IT solutions for hospitals and clinics
Volunteer: 2 years as a tutor for homeless children at local shelter in community.
My goal is to go into equity research primarily focused on the healthcare and life science sector after my MBA. One of my primary concerns is whether my PhD work experience as a research assistant counts as work experience for MBA application. I was technically a paid employee of the University throughout my PhD.

Thanks for posting, and congrats on that GMAT and on your PhD.
PhD's applying for an MBA primarily need to focus on their explanation of the WHY... and to assure the admissions committee that they know what they are getting into; that they know this is the right next step for them and why that is; that they aren't just looking for 'another degree' so to speak but have valid reasons why pursuing an MBA at this point in time is vital to their short and long term career goals.
You'll also need to ensure you describe your past experiences in a compelling way so as to demonstrate what you'll bring to the class, and what is unique about you. Work experience during the PhD as a research assistant etc, is not usually equated with actual 'full time post-graduate work experience'.... but that doesn't mean it does not have any value; think about how you've demonstrated leadership, teamwork... how you've motivated others, made an impact, etc.
Your interest in the healthcare sector and combining your past plus the MBA to your next career steps sounds interesting and potentially appealing; again anything you can show to strengthen the idea that this is the right path for you and that you've done your research etc will help. I think the schools you have mentioned are appropriate; generally it will likely come down to how you explain your rationale and your past experiences and future goals in your application and interviews. Good luck!
