Thanks in advance for your review of my profile. I'm hoping you can give me some guidance on my chances at Top 5 schools and if there is a preferred "story" to tell to improve those chances.
I'm a 27 year old Caucasian male planning to apply for R1 in Fall 2015. I worked as an engineering intern at a large multinational company during college and was recruited to co-found a startup that designs and manufactures radar absorbing materials serving the US military and consumer electronics markets. I've worked as the engineering and quality manager of that company for the past 5 years. My primary role is to lead all technology initiatives, including standard product formulation, advanced material development, and design of custom solutions. The feather is my cap is the development of a flight-qualified stealth material for a next generation aircraft. Since inception we have grown to >$3M in annual revenue.
I scored a 720 on the GMAT (48Q 41V), went to the University of California, San Diego and graduated in 2009 with a 3.895 GPA majoring in Bioegineering (biotechnology). My extra-curricular activities are lacking because I've worked >70 hr weeks throughout my career. Our company recently secured a long-term contract that my partners hope to retire off of, but I'm ready to move on and come back full circle to the biotechnology/health care sector. Post-MBA goals would be to work at startup life sciences companies or somehow break into VC in the biotechnology realm.

Hi there,
Thanks for posting. Your experience with the start up, success of the company, and the innovative aspects of your developing material for a new stealth aircraft etc are intriguing and should help you stand out from the fairly large pool of engineering applicants. And your GMAT and GPA are solid. If I were a member of an admissions committee I'd immediately ask to learn/understand more about YOUR personal role in starting up the company... and there may be even more value/interest if you were more involved with all aspects of the business (as opposed to just functioning as it's head engineer), even if just in the early phases... basically thinking about what you will contribute to the class, based on your past experience. Depending on all of that, and your essays of course which can make a large impact since you create them from scratch to represent who you are as a person and potential classmate, then I think you could have a shot at top business schools, yes. It's good to keep in mind that schools like Stanford & HBS are extremely difficult to get into no matter HOW qualified you are, and it often comes down to which of the qualified applicants the committee chooses, so there are no guarantees etc, but you are well-positioned certainly! Good luck, keep us posted with questions, and be sure not to underestimate those essays, the one area you have not worked on yet of the application/where you can still make an impact.
