Question

Hello sir/madam,

I have given my GMAT recently and got a score of 590(Q-49,V-23,AWA-4.0,IR-5.0).

I have shortlisted few B-Schools which are,

--> Columbia University

--> Georgia State University

--> Ohio State University

--> University of Minnesota

--> University of Rhode Island

--> University of Western Australia

--> Queen's University

--> Ivey Business School

--> Crummer Graduate School of Business

--> Marquette University

--> Collins College of Business---University of Tulsa

--> Goodman School of Business

--> Schulich School of Business

My Profile:

B.Tech in Electrical and Communications Engineering with a GPA of 3.2

2.5 years of professional experience in a IT software company.

I have been involved in extra curricular activities both in my personal and professional life.

Can you please guide me in B-School selection, as to which schools are best to do my MBA with specialization in Human Resources Stream ??

Is there is any hope for me with my current GMAT score in my target schools, with my current profile.

Please advise !!!

Hello! Thanks for sharing your profile and list of target schools. First question -- is retaking the GMAT an option for you? Your verbal score in particular is going to be a big red flag, especially since you work in a technical field. If not, then be thinking about other ways you can demonstrate that you have strong communication skills (e.g., essays, recommendations, etc.).

Of the schools on your short list, Columbia is by far the biggest stretch. Their average GMAT is well above 700. The others you list seem more reasonable...though schools like Ohio State and Ivey and Schulich in Canada have average GMATs in the high 600s so your score will likely still be outside their middle 80%. I would still keep them on your list but just know that the GMAT could be a bigger hurdle at schools like that. A few other programs you might want to consider given your interest in Human Resources...Purdue, Michigan State, and Wisconsin.

That's great that you've got the extracurricular involvement. Make sure you've got a clear and logical story around why you're making this career change from IT to HR at this point in your career. Since those are very different fields, think about what skills you have now that will be applicable to your ideal post-MBA role.

One last thought -- is going part-time an option for you? Part-time programs are typically less competitive than full-time and so your GMAT may be less of a concern there. Just something to consider....good luck to you and let us know if we can help!

Well thanks a lot team.Coming to your analysis, retaking is not the criteria for me and the schools(purdue,michigan n wisconsin) that you suggested allow only fall admissions whereas I am concentrating on Spring intake.

Hence i dont think I will be able to apply to those universities now but I sincerely request you to let me know how good are my chances of getting an admit in the below mentioned universities. Request you to rate them on the criteria of quality of education and jobs post graduation

4. Pace University
5. Texas State university

Hi there, glad you've narrowed down your list. Those schools all seem in similar range to me and I'm not sure I know enough to judge quality of education from one to the other. See if the schools will put you in touch with recent alumni or current students so you can learn more there. Also, most schools should publish their career placement stats so check there to determine employment prospects. One thought to consider is that these are in very different locations, so think about where you'd like to end up....e.g., if having internship / job opportunities in the Northeast / NYC is important, then Pace would be a great option. If you're interested in Southeast / Gulf region, then Alabama or Texas State would be great (likely to have lots of job opportunities in Oil & Gas if that's an area of interest for you). Good luck!!
