Hi there,
I'm still far ahead of b-school application (thinking about attending Fall 2018 at the earliest and possibly Fall 2019), but I'd love to get some thoughts and advice on things I should focus on in the next 1-2 years to improve my profile.
Please evaluate my profile below:
GMAT:
- 740 (Q49 / V42)
- Thoughts on re-taking? I was really aiming for 750 with an ideal score of 770, and a little part of me really wants to re-take given that we can preview our score before deciding whether to submit officially; my verbal is lower than expected (typically ~44), and my quant was a bit lower (typically ~50); 6 on AWA was good, but 6 on IR was bad... not sure how much adcoms care about these
Academics:
- School: UPenn (I think my name might've given that away!)
- GPA: ~3.75, magna cum laude
- Degree: BS in Econ; majors in Finance & Management, minor in a humanities subject
Personal:
- Asian male, will be ~25-26 when attending b-school
Work Experience:
- Current: Entry-level consulting at MBB (American office), started recently
- Future: May do a 1/2 year leave of absence later to intern for a international development agency (USAID, World Bank, or impact investing firm)
- Expected: 3-4 years at the same firm, promotion track is fairly consistent (but definitely won't make managerial positions by then)
Extra Curricular:
- In College: I had 2 solid leadership positions, both of which were very rewarding and also interesting from an interviewer/adcom's perspective
- Current: Pro-bono consulting as part of my firm, plan to get more involved with an international development organization that I was involved in college (now moving onto the adult chapter)
- Future: Would love more advice on this; I feel it's been hard to think of a theme to focus on, and also not sure how people find things to do in the adult world... ECs were super easy find in school b/c of activity fairs, etc.
Target Schools:
- Top Choice: HBS, GSB
- Close to top: Kellogg
- If top choices don't work out: Wharton (don't think it's worthwhile to go back), Booth, Sloan
- Subjects: more investment-oriented quant skills/subjects with a mix of strategy, leadership development, and the liberal arts
- Other considerations: would LOVE to do a dual degree in international development / policy, not sure what this requires or if it would hurt my b-school chances
Goal:
- Pre-MBA: May consider PE in a year or two (thoughts on this?); Would be great to be sponsored for MBA
- Post-MBA: If sponsored, go back to firm for at least 2-3 years; later, PE/VC or strategy/M&A leader for high growth company or F100
