Hello there good sir!
So you have a good profile with many interesting things in it (and a cool user profile image! :) )

A lot will depend on the GMAT, as you can imagine, so I wish you the best of luck in that of course!

Now, your work experience is a bit of a mixed bag. It's interesting and diverse (which is great). But one of the problems with working at startups is that they lack the brand name recognition of big firms. So this will make your profile weaker when you go up against your peers. You CAN offset this by showing some amazing leadership and personal achievements, but people from bigger firms (just like people from better schools) will always be at a distinct advantage.

I think overall, Top10 in the US will be out of range for you even with a 740. You lack the grades and your work experience is a bit on the weak side. However, most of the Asian/European schools, and Top 20 schools in the US would be possible with such a score.

I hope this helps! And feel free to drop us a line for a free consultation.

Best,
Jon Frank

Hi Jon,
Thank you for the response. Would a 760 help? i wish to apply to at least one program from the Top 10 not apply for the sake of applying but to atleast land an interview call . According to FT rankings any US program in the Top 30 would be a dream. I hope this dream gets fulfilled. How do i shape my profile for these schools or rather a specific top 10 school viz - harvard , kellogg , stanford , columbia , tuck , darden , haas , anderson and the reason to choose Kellogg is because of it's marketing program , but out of these niche schools i wish i could figure out a school where i can have a shot , lets say about 20-35% of getting in which is very high

Also don't you think that having an own business gives an edge over people who have worked for MNC's because setting up a business takes more effort and time and there are a lot more things to learn from it. Though the business has failed or hasn't reached its full potential yet and is in the doldrums the lessons it teaches are more valuable than what a normal MNC job teaches you

Any thoughts on this?

Regards,
HK
Dear HK,
To be honest beyond a certain point a higher GMAT doesn't help that much. Once you have passed the "threshold" schools don't seem to care much about what score you have (and the statistics bear this out). What CAN help in this case though is having an amazing application - really the story you tell can be a game-changer. The thing to keep in mind by Top 10 programs is that you will be up against people who DO have amazing schools and amazing GPAs and amazing employers. And even if you have a 760 or even an 800 on the GMAT, and they have a 720, their total package is likely to still appear more appealing. That's why the STORY is the key.

As for having your own business, as a business owner myself, I may tend to agree with you :) But at the same time, B-school is designed for corporate jobs, and someone who went to a bulge bracket bank or MBB, or huge tech firms will still always have an edge up. So it's not so much about what I think, as about understanding how the B-schools will evaluate you.

Anyhow, for now, get that GMAT score. Roll those ideas around in your head for your essay, look into Top 30 schools and see which appeal to you, and we can work things out moving forward.

Best,
JF
