Hi

I used the gmat club extensively for my gmat prep and suffice to say, I am extremely grateful to this website. So I'm convinced that the experts here would be well placed to evaluate my profile.

Age: 23 years

Background:
Undergraduate Degree: Computer Science Engineering with a GPA of 8.5 (10 point system)
GMAT score: 760 (Q 49, V 44)

Work experience:
Company: Software Development Engineer at Microsoft R&D
Years: 2 years

Extra-Curricular:
1. Won multiple hackathons which involve indeation of a project, developing it and shipping it to consumers. These competitions were at country as well as international level. One of the projects gave me the opportunity to pitch to investors in the Silicon Valley (San Francisco).
2. Patent for another project.

Target Schools:
1. Insead
2. HEC Paris

Post-MBA goal:
To get a management level job in companies such as Google, Amazon, Facebook (Industry mainly)

Comments:
Now I understand that my work ex is on the short side, but I was hoping that working in one of the top tech companies along with a solid GMAT score and good extra-curricular achievements would maybe shift the scales. I would also be open to working for maybe another year to increase my chances.

I would be grateful to get some advice.

Thanks

Hi there!
Yes, it looks like whatever you did on GMAT prep paid off - well done! Strong GPA as well.

That is great you've been working at a top company, and have the exposure you gained through the hackathons. Have you been promoted? Have you had any experience leading teams, even if small ones? Do you also have community involvement or activities outside of work-related activities? If no to all or most of these questions, I think it would be worth waiting to boost those parts of your profile. The average work experience for both INSEAD and HEC Paris is 6 years, so you are well below that.

It's still possible to be accepted at your experience level, if you are strong in all other areas and can show fast progression, leadership potential, and clear reasons for why you need your MBA now, but it will be more challenging.

Hope this is helpful!

Hi kate,

Thanks for the quick response. To shed some more context, I recently got promoted (one of the quickest promotions in my organization). I will be leading a team of 3 on a project which is set to run for 6 months. It is yet to start though, so I think it would be best if I waited another year before applying. I could use the extra time to give back to the community. There are many teach for good initiatives that are growing in popularity and seem to be a good way to round off my profile.

Thanks for the insight!

That's great! You could give it a shot this year, but I don't think there's a need to rush it. Taking another year will allow you to show impressive results from that project (hopefully!), build up some community leadership, and also spend some time visiting and researching your target schools.

Keep us posted if you have other questions, or would like to do a free phone consultation when it gets closer to the time to apply.
