Hi mbaMission team,
I am an Indian female and 29 years old. I took GMAT recently and scored 700 (Q48, V38, IR 6, AWA 4). I would really appreciate if you can evaluate my profile:
Graduation: Bachelor of Business Administration (Petro-marketing); GPA 3.07/4
Post-Graduation: Master of Business Administration (Oil & Gas management); GPA 3.00/4
Work Experience (From earliest to latest):
1. 1 year and 6 months as a Business Development Executive at an upstream oil & gas service provider. My work majorly involved approaching and dealing with the prospective clients, in other words getting business for the firm. Other areas of my work involved preparation of bidding documents, identifying and coordinating with sub-contractors and vendors and reviewing quotations from them, to be the point of contact for the clients, and preparation of project schedule, once the firm received the project.
2. 2 years first as Editorial Assistant and then as Associate Production Editor at a prestigious Academic Publisher. My work involved overseeing the production of assigned UK and US journals from receipt of articles through delivery of manufacturing and online publication with conformance to the authors’ and editors’ requirement, while maintaining quality and excellent relationships with authors, editors and societies. I also worked closely with the international (US and UK) office departments, such as editorial, art/design, marketing and production staff to produce journal issues on time and with the external agencies, i.e. typesetters, freelancers, copyeditors, vendors, etc. I also trained the new employees and provided regular refresher sessions and training to the existing employees of my department which improved the overall department productivity.
3. For the past 2.5 years I have not been working. My husband has a transferable job because of which we had to move to a small town which does not have any employment opportunities for me. I am quite concerned about how I would justify this work gap in my applications favourably.
Goals: At this point of time, I am unsure of how to align my work experience to form realistic short term and long term goals. I have acquired relationship building and marketing skills through my work experience but not sure of how to move forward from here.
Additional Information: I and my husband are both applying to various MBA programs in US. I am not eyeing for the top schools, given my profile. I am targeting Michigan State University and Katz business school, Pittsburgh for now as my husband is applying to higher rank schools in the same cities. I am hoping that you would be able to suggest some schools as per my profile.

Hi there,
So while a 700 is respectable GMAT-wise and you have proved your academic credentials to a fair degree, you have lot of challenges you are fighting against within this process.... including a) not having worked for quite some time; VERY difficult to explain/overcome in many situations, b) your prior work sounds a bit choppy in terms of focus and lacking in a lot of leadership and impact compared with other applicants, from what I can gather here, and c) you do technically have an MBA... so you have to justify the need for another which is also challenging. Michigan State may be out of reach.... you can try if it would make sense logistically, but Katz may be a bit more reasonable... I'd keep it to schools with GMAT less averages less than 620/600 and/or acceptances rates over 45-55% or more if possible... could you get involved in a community/volunteer organization in a leadership role at least, or look for online work, or something to get back to gaining professional experience? Wish I had a more positive response, but keep researching schools and options and good luck!!
