Hi,
I would really appreciate if an expert here would be kind enough to provide answers to the following questions regarding my profile.
Questions:
1. Should I retest for the GRE and target some improvement in my quant score to get closer to 330 or go for GMAT and target a score of 720+(have given 1 official mock but the scored pretty low at 650)
2. I feel I might overwhelming myself with too many options which might have a negative impact on the quality of my applications. How do I narrow down my application pool list?
Profile:
Indian, Male, Engineer, 29
Academics
• Undergrad - BITS Pilani, (top 10 - 20 institutions in India)
• Graduated in 2016 with a dual degree in Civil engineering and biological sciences
• GPA – 7.2/ 10 scale (first class)
• GRE-324(Q163, V161)
Work Experience
Experience: 5 years at time of application
2016 - 2021: Mid-tier engineering firm engaged in commissioning and maintaining Telecommunication networks for India’s largest telecom players in Northern India
1. Started out as a Graduate Trainee engineer and have since had 2 promotions (would probably have had a third one if not for covid) Current role is a Project Coordinator (engineering manager)
2. Main focus has been on carrying out projects in treacherous environments like, mountainous regions and deserts
3. Have quite some management experiences as I currently lead a team of 15 individuals
4. Was involved in a major operational overall that helped the company save nearly 30% in operation costs right before the pandemic thereby helping it ride out the the storm.
Co-founder of a Start-up: (1.5 years)
1. Got together with a few friends to set up an online platform that offers highly subsidised digital test education resources to help children from rural areas.
2. Currently engaging over 2500 students with nearly half a million rupees in yearly revenues.
ECs
1. Company coordinator for CSR initiative whereby we provide financial support to individuals from economically weaker sections for their medical expenses. (I vet profiles and also carry out outreach with hospitals)
2. Was part of university NSS chapter: Organised blood donation camps and Community kitchens as well as tutoring lessons for children of university staff.
3. Captain of the university field hockey team
Reason for B-school now:
• Global Exposure
• Pivot a to a new role: Business analytics and consulting. I hope to move into the more business side of things from my current engineering management role.
• Long term I hope to expand my current startup into an edtech and health tech consulting firm.
Target schools:
• Ambitious: Darden (UVA), Duke (Fuqua), Kenan Flager(UNC), Tepper(CMU) , Rotman(U of Toronto)
• Target: Kelley (Indiana), Jones (Rice), Owen (Vanderbilt), WP Carey (ASU), Mendoza (Notre Dame)
• Safe: Rady (UCSD), Simon (Rochester), Katz (Uni of Pittsburgh)

Q: It depends. If you feel you can do even better with little preparation, why not? You have ample time before R1 applications. If you need some or a large amount of preparation, then it depends. You are going to have to transition into application execution mode and you don't want to be taking away too much time from that to focus on retaking the exam when you have already pretty good score. Stick with the GRE as I believe you'll stand a better chance of doing better given familiarity and likely prep time.

Q: I agree. You definitely need to narrow this list down. You can either go all in on a few ambitious and target schools in R1 and then save your other target and safe schools for R2. Alternatively, you can do a 2-2-2 strategy by picking one in each category for R1. Then, depending on how things pan out, you can add in more applications for R2. I would put a hard cap on 6 schools as that is a lot for one round.

Q: It depends. If you feel you can do even better with little preparation, why not? You have ample time before R1 applications. If you need some or a large amount of preparation, then it depends.
