Hi
MBAAspirant133,
You have some wonderful accomplishments, it's a pleasure to read your story, and congrats on your excellent GMAT score. I'm sorry to hear about INSEAD but don't lose heart.
I'm wondering if there is a question in here, perhaps whether your odds are good for the M7 or how to help yourself stand out? As you probably know, you are in a highly competitive category for MBA admission, and it can be an uphill battle to make the cut. My advice would be to try some M7 programs, but also to look just beyond them to the Top 15 or so programs to improve your chances. There are actually some amazing programs that can potentially get you where you want to go and might be even better suited for your goals.
There are a few tips I would recommend to you as you look to apply...
1) It can be a problem at some schools to apply from an unknown startup/small firm. Work hard to demonstrate how real and professional your agency is, who the clients might be (hopefully some well known names?), and how you have grown it
2) Adcoms can be skeptical about fuzzy or difficult goals, esp. ones that might not be a great fit for their program. Product management and VC are pretty different goals, and might be easier or harder to break into at some schools vs. others. My advice would be to do your homework on the reality of breaking into these goals from your targeted schools (esp for someone with your background). This will not only help you hone your argument (for your essays), but also help you actually make your dreams happen (you will be building a critical network before you start, and that's one thing tech and VC have in common: networking helps).
3) If a school has an optional essay, you can bring context for your low marks, but if so, do it without making excuses. In your case, it might be connected to a passion for communication, but handle this carefully...a simple statement is usually best.
4) Execution matters! If you are aiming for the top programs, and have any drawbacks at all as an applicant from a competitive category, there is definitely no room for additional error. Really make sure you bring your best to the process! If in doubt, get help.
5) Keep an open mind. I'm adding one more plug for looking at other programs beyond the so-called M7 - look at Darden's Batten Institute and VC internship opportunities, check out Ross's tech connections and MAP internship opportunities, investigate what's going on at Haas. Look at the tech connections at Fuqua, Foster, McCombs. You like media? What about Anderson, Stern, Marshall (that Trojan network is deep in LA)? You may find that you prefer some non-M7 programs to some of the M7 options!
Good luck!
Warmly,
