Hi,
I am applying to HBS 2+2 and would really appreciate having my profile evaluated if possible! Thanks in advance!!
DemographicsAge: 22
Gender: Female
Citizen: Afghan-Canadian
Diversity: First Gen college student, lower socio economic background, refugee family
EducationBASc in Engineering at Top 2 Canadian Engineering School
GPA: 3.4+ (Hoping to graduate with 3.7, only 2.4% off!)
Graduating: April 2021
GMATTook my first practice today and got a 710(Q44, V44) with minimal studying. I have totally forgotten high school math and struggled with basic things like probability - definitely anticipate a score increase with studying. Aiming for a 720-740 if possible!
Looking for Intake: HBS 2+2 Class of 2024
Work Experience:
4 Engineering Internships in Canada and the U.S.
- Engineering leadership role at FAANG (2 internships in a row - have a great relationship with my team and will likely return full time after graduating)
- Project Engineering at top 3 aerospace company
- Technical Account Manager at top 10 consumer electronics firm
Highlights:- I pitched a feature to Apple VPs; they advocated for its immediate inclusion in iOS 14 and I was awarded a patent for inventing it
- At one of my FAANG internships, we were short on staff and I ended up managing a project with $14m budget during Covid 19 shutdowns - my recommender can write extensively about how I struggled and persevered through this with minimal formal training.
Extracurricular Activities- Co-founder, Director of Innovation, and Vice Chairman at a 501C3 non profit based out of the U.S. that empowers marginalized communities in war torn countries through social entrepreneurship and innovation (currently piloting in Afghanistan)
- Youth mentor for marginalized youth in my local refugee community
- Well known activist & community organizer within my local refugee community
- Cultural leader: I've organized events to propagate forms of poetry and handicraft that were lost in the Afghan diaspora due to war and displacement - I've collaborated with UofT and UCL for funding
- Volunteer translator for refugees arriving in the EU
- Volunteer language teacher on behalf of UofT; taught myself 2 languages and now teach them to other Afghan youth
- I've personally connected 20+ families living in severe poverty to international sponsors; clothed and fed nearly 100 IDP kids; collaborated with ISF to bring polio vaccines to marginalized children living in IDP camps, etc. (I organize annual fundraisers and clothing drives then distribute the funds)
- Entrepreneur and Social Innovator at my own E-Commerce business where I employ marginalized Afghan women to produce goods that are sold to a global audience. In the program they receive skill development training, fair compensation, and humanitarian support by way of food packages and education financing for their children
Recommenders1. Mid-level Manager at FAANG company (he is a huge supporter of me & put me in extremely challenging situations to develop my leadership skills - he can speak to how I navigated these difficulties)
2. A faculty member at my University (she knows about my entrepreneurial ventures & humanitarian work & has formally graded me)
Post-MBA goalsShort term: Not 100% sure - Either continue on my FAANG track and strengthen fundamental technical skills, or go into consulting to widen my scope and expand my business skills
Long term: Expand my non profit; focus on mentoring and investing into promising tech social innovations based in war torn & failed countries
My personal mission: I am a humanitarian at heart and plan on devoting my life to empowering children born in war torn countries such as Afghanistan; I plan on making this a reality through STEM education and targeted investments into social innovation. My personal mission is aligned with the organizational mission at the non-profit I cofounded. I want to leverage the alumni network at Harvard to spread awareness about our mission, and get financial and other support to turn my vision into a reality.
Thank you so much for taking the time, I really appreciate it!!!
