Hello,
First time poster here. I was hoping someone could help give me some insight on if I have a decent shot of getting into some of these schools. I have been looking at various websites and have found conflicting information about some of the class profiles (Also the low admit rates are very confusing to me. How does a school admit only 1/3 of the applicants but the average GMAT is only like a 620?). I have a 3.1 GPA from my undergrad and also did a 1 year grad certificate in which I got a 3.7 GPA. 640 GMAT (Don't remember the exact scores but I was at 38 percentile in quant and 85 in verbal). I have 3 years work experience in the hospitality industry working in Las Vegas Casinos (In marketing/sales and as a hotel Concierge). I'm not trying to get in Harvard or an elite program, but I do want to get into a decent school. I feel that my biggest strength is that my work background is very unique, and my biggest weakness is my low quant score that adds to my lack of quant courses during undergrad (Last quant course was as a freshman year of college and I got a D+ in it, although that was 7 years ago). I am taking Accounting and Statistics classes next semester and have made it known to schools that I plan to do so.

I am looking at:
Pepperdine
USD
George Washington
Miami (FL)
USC (Reach School)
UCI (Also probably a reach)

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Hi there,
Definitely a less-common profile; that can actually benefit you if you do a good job telling your story and showing both a) what you'll bring to the program in terms of interesting professional experiences, and also b) exactly why you need the MBA (very important for you). You'll need a strong and clear post-MBA plan. I agree with your assessment of your strengths and weaknesses, and with your school list run-down... in terms of acceptance rates, they do still get a lot of applications even if not all have high GMAT scores etc.... I think you could aim for this list but also consider adding one more that's even safer..... good luck in the process, let us know if we can help further! :)

Hi Jen,
Thank you for your reply! As far as why I want an MBA, long story short last December my job at the hotel was cut down to "As needed" status due to buget cuts, so I took a full time job in another industry. Then in June my old job reached out to me and asked if I wanted my old job back. I accepted, and then got told 6 weeks later I was getting laid off in September. Getting essentially laid off from the same job twice in 10 months was a big eye opener for me. I love hospitality, and do want to stay in the industry, but I want to get into a bigger picture role, either in finance or strategy. I did a lot of research on the leaders in my old company and realized they all had hard business backgrounds and skills (Accounting, finance, management, etc.). However, I do think my background in hotel operations would give me a unique perspective to this type of role. Not everyone has that hands on experience of seeing first hand how a major resort operates, and I think mixing that experience with the skills I will learn in business school will help me in my post MBA career. My undergrad major was in communications, so really I want to earn an MBA to learn some of those hard business skills I mentioned. Also forgot to mention I am applying to UCR as well. That is probably my safest school. Thanks again :)
