Hey Experts,
I had applied to some top schools last year but it didn't turn out as expected. I plan to reapply this year with a changed list of schools (May have 1 or 2 same from last year). I needed some advice on my profile as well as the schools I should target. I plan to apply in Round 1 this year. Please find my details below. It would be great if you could help here.
GMAT score: 740
Bio: 24 years old, Indian male. Looking to join the Aug 2023 session of MBA (with ~4 years of work ex)
Education:
Undergraduate CGPA: 8.6/10
UG degree: B.E. (Hons.) in Manufacturing Engineering from BITS Pilani (a Tier 1 college in India)
Work Experience:
During UG:
- 2 months internship at Honda Motorcycles (one of the biggest 2-wheeler manufacturers in the country)
- 6 months internship at Swiggy (biggest quick commerce start-up in India) - received a PPO.
After UG: 3 months with Swiggy. Working as a manager in the Central discounting team; solving for growth in the food delivery business. Have been promoted once in March 2021, Looking at another promotion in Oct 2022.
Why MBA: Found myself lacking in some skills which I will be able to develop faster during the MBA. Networking with people in industries around the world will help expand my perspective.
Short Term Goal: Get into management consulting right after my MBA to gain experience in various industries.

Please let me know if any more details are required.
Hello
mrunank,
Thanks for writing in.
While your undergrad degree from a Tier 1 institution as well as your career progression (with the promotion and hopefully leadership experience as well) will add value to your candidature, your current GMAT score, though good, works out to be around the average for an Indian male candidate from an engineering background (an extremely over-represented pool). In our opinion, your shortlist, last season, did not completely factor in the same, or even if it did, you possibly wanted to go very aggressive.
While you have not added extensive details pertaining to your work, we are assuming you will have decent leadership exposure and a number of talking points in terms of your achievements at work. The short-term goals look in line; however, we would want to see better sync between your short-term and long-term goals. For instance, if the idea is to eventually end up in the e-commerce domain, why are you not pursuing a position in the same domain in the short term itself. Of course, this is only our opinion, but we do think you need to re-think your career goals.
If you are looking at retaining a school from the previous shortlist, something like a Darden could stay. However, with your existing profile, you might need to consider schools ranked between US top ~15 and US top ~20. The UK anyway does not have a large number of options.
Should you wish to have a detailed discussion, you could get in touch with us for a free profile evaluation session.
All the best!
