Hi Vivek, top 5 is fine.

All your stats are fine but the fact that you don't have freedom to make a significant impact at work is a BIG PROBLEM and you need to figure out a way to show yourself as a successful and innovative leader. You need to be able to take the initiative either at work our outside of work, and achieve an impressive result. Business schools care about IMPACT. I stand by my recommendation to secure a board position on an NGO. You have time, go and do it. This is the meat and potatoes of it all.

If you don't fix this, you are just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic. This is a far greater problem than your AWA and IR scores.

Hope you take action on this and my other recommendations. Not sure the book recommendation guy will have impact; you need to have someone back you up as a someone who makes this happen, gets things done and solves problems in a business context. This can be at work or a nonprofit.

Dear MBAPrepCoach,

Thank you very much for your feedback! I'm glad to know that I'm on the right track. With regards to my undergraduate university, it is a top 5 school in India for my program. However, it's not a feeder school and I'm hence not sure how the adcom would look at it. Although I hope to have cleared all 3 levels of the CFA program by the time I apply next year, I've currently only cleared the first two levels. Taking a conservative stand, would this be enough to allay any concerns about the school?

Although my current job does not give me formal leadership roles, I have a client facing role and always work in teams (where I mentor and guide junior members). I also get to handle critical areas of engagements and get a good degree of analytical work.

Regarding the point on the NGO, I am actively involved with one in the space of animal rights ( although it doesn't have a formal board). I've been with it since 2017. I think I should be able to write about leadership roles in it, but wouldn't be able to get a strong recommendation letter as most volunteers are students or young professionals. I would however, be able to get a good recommendation letter from the person who I co-authored the book with.

Also, do you think my low AWA and IR scores as well as slightly low quant score on the GMAT pose any challenges? Thanks again for your time!

Dear MBAPrepCoach,

Thank you for your insights! I will definitely try taking up a position on the board of a non profit. I wouldn't want the absence of formal leadership roles to be a hindrance to a successful admit.
