Hi,
I’m Roshan from India. I’m looking to apply for an MBA this year for the 2024 intake. Thank you for setting this consultation up. Would appreciate your views on my profile.
• Demographic – Indian, Male
• Education – Madras University (RKM Vivekananda College), 70%-75%, Majored in Bachelor of Commerce (Specialization in Finance and Accounting). 3 Year UG degree
• Extracurriculars – Vice President of the Rotract Club during college. Part of organizing various tournaments, blood drives, and I was in-charge of recruiting, and delegating work to new recruits.
• GMAT – 690. Q46, V39
• Work Experience –
• 5 Years of Work Experience in the Financial Services industry. Specifically Private Wealth Management and Investment Advisory. Worked directly under the two partners of the firm
• My role is primarily that of a decision maker, ideator of new investment ideas, and capital allocator. My team and I decide what goes into each client’s advisory portfolio. In addition to this, I’m also involved in various forms of communication (conducting webinars, writing blogs, interacting with other experts in the industry, etc.). My role in client interaction is limited to the sales team requests (portfolio reviews, lead conversion) or when necessary.
• For the last two years, my team and I are also managing a PMS (Portfolio Management Service), a multi asset and geographically diverse portfolio. My role here is Investment Strategy, daily portfolio actions and client communication.
• Promotions – Investment Strategist -> Associate Vice President – Investment Strategy
• Accomplishments – Responsible for an average annual growth of 47% in advisory assets, led the bond investment advisory desk and accumulated assets of over $10 Million over 3 years.
• International / Multicultural exposure – International exposure is limited to a handful of personal interactions with clients. Rich multicultural exposure with colleagues and clients from across India. I've also hosted multiple webinars where I have addressed clients within and outside India
• Post MBA Goals – Management consulting (MBB preferred).
• Target Schools – I would appreciate your views on where I would stand a chance but here are some that I desire
• Booth
• Stanford
• Harvard
• Columbia
• Haas – Berkeley
• Stern
• Rotman
• Imperial College
• INSEAD
• London Business School
• Said – Oxford
• SDA Bocconi
• HEC Paris
• Alliance - Manchester Business School
• Other Relevant Information – I could not continue with any extracurriculars after undergrad because work has always been hectic (8.5 hours a day X 6 days a week). I also plan on re-attempting the GMAT sometime in July. Want to get my score to a 730+.
Also could you let me know if my background in Wealth Management would make my application stand out in terms of diversity? From what I'm aware the Indian - Male - Engineering profile is quite common.

Thanks for reaching out to us. In terms of strengths, it seems that your work profile, especially your multiple promotions, interactions with clients, and investment achievements are quite strong. I agree that your wealth management background will stand out a bit within the Indian male demographic, but it's still a competitive demographic. What concerns me most is your GMAT score, especially since your undergrad background just seems fine, not standout. And also your lack of extracurriculars. Lots of applicants work long hours but still pursue a few extras. Are there hobbies you pursue that you can formalize? Extra things you do at work that you can position differently? But mostly, a GMAT improvement will be most valuable to admissions.
In terms of target schools, with your current score, I think Harvard and Stanford are for sure reaches (they still would be even with a higher score), and Booth and Columbia are reaches too. Probably INSEAD, LBS, Berkeley, and Stern will be quite tough with your current score as all of those schools have GMAT averages above your score. The others on your list seem more possible, but I'd still wait to apply until you've maximized your GMAT (and perhaps had some time to add some extracurriculars too!). I realize this is a quick assessment but I hope it helps you see where you stand.

. I want to apply for the 2024 intake, so I'm not sure if I'd have enough time to pursue any meaningful extracurriculars by the time I start applying. Nevertheless, I will definitely think back on if there's anything that I could add to my application that'll carry weight. I can definitely get my GMAT score up by July. I understand that the US schools on my list are definitely a stretch but if I should get a score around 730-740, would I realistically stand a chance with that score plus the other aspects of my profile?
