Hi Yzreel,
Thanks for posting your profile! I like that you have an interesting background - from a graphic design undergrad background to commercial banking. It also sounds like you're doing well at work given your upcoming promotion.
Apart from work experience, business schools also evaluate your academic track record (GPA, GMAT) and your leadership experiences (at work or through extracurricular activities). I don't have information on your extracurriculars, but based on the other data I have here, it looks to me that your work experience is in line with what the schools on your list are looking for.
As for whether the schools on your list are realistic, it depends partly on your final GMAT score. If you get a 720/730 as planned, the schools on your list look reasonable. You can also check each school's average GMAT score to get a feel for how competitive you might be. HBS/GSB/Wharton are reaches for everyone, regardless of their profile or GMAT score. However, if these are your dream schools, you owe it to yourself to at least apply.
As you pull your apps together, be sure to describe what motivates you to be passionate about your career goals (which I don't have here). Why MBA? What specific skillset or knowledge are you seeking at business school to help you achieve your goals?
If you can articulate this compellingly in your essays, that would be the key to your application success. If you would like to discuss your profile in more detail, feel free to schedule a 1:1 consultation with us. Wishing you the best in your MBA journey!
Sincerely,
Debbie
Hi Debbie, thank you so much for the reply!
It's nice to hear that you don't think my list is impossible, because I thought it might be an impossible list lol
Yes, I would say I've been doing great at work. I've basically received promotion whenever possible (from Trainee to Assistant Manager to Manager and then Senior Manager/AVP Candidate in the 4 years span), but I was worried that a national company would not translate to a good enough brand for my achievements to matter much, so thank you for saying that it seems to look good for you.
Regarding extracurriculars / other interests, here are some of the things I've done:
1. Wrote three novels (although unpublished) and several short stories (one won a national competition, but the news had been taken down);
2. Was part of the main event team for a national Christmas celebration (10,000+ attendees, also attended by the President of my country);
3. Was the Student Council President for my undergrad;
4. Am a moderator/community manager for an informal newsletter community (100k+ IG followers; 4k+ active Discord community);
5. Part of high school basketball team; and
6. Have designed the full concept of a video game for an indie game developer (which sadly hasn't been made into actual game due to funding issue from the developer)
About the list of schools, again thank you for saying it's reasonable (although yes, I am aware that it depends on my final score). I have indeed checked the average GMAT, and I think I might have an edge because I come from a country with traditionally lower GMAT peers (unlike India), a friend of mine got accepted into Cambridge and another to Oxford with GMAT score of less than 650. I actually have a question in regards to this list, do you think ten applications for a round are too much? What would be the "optimal number", in your experience? I find myself in a bind because I really don't mind working in Europe, UK, or US; so the list gets longer than most.
The "why MBA" question, other than some deeply personal reasons (I think they are good and dramatic reasons) that I will share in the essays, is mainly for me to perform a "triple jump". I wish to move to a developed country, into a sector different from commercial banking, and in a function that is more strategic than my current function. I think MBA is the only way I can manage this.
Again, thank you so very much for the advice and support! I will definitely schedule that consultation, but after I take my GMAT (turns out I have to reschedule to the 23rd of Nov for work reason) and have a clearer application so the consultation will be more fruitful.
