I posted this on reddit earlier, but then remembered this forum and thought it would be great to get some help from the experts here!
Hello,
Just a quick note: I'm not planning on applying for this cycle, but am planning on applying in fall 2017. I figured I'd do a
profile review before that to see if there are parts of my application I can shore up before I send out apps! Just keep in mind that I will have 1 more year of work experience, 1 more year to flesh out my extra curriculars, etc. than what is listed by the time I apply.
Background Work experience: 1 year as a Data Scientist at a major tech company (one of Google/Facebook/Microsoft). There's a lot of "data science" jobs out there now, but my company/team tends to be pretty hardcore about it -- Exabyte scale data, regular research publications on cutting edge Machine Learning techniques, generally considered a "true" data science org. We have a good amount of impact across different divisions within the company. I was promoted at my first year review, and should be on track for another promotion before sending out my applications.
Extra curriculars: Pretty weak honestly. I have been a mentor for a local highschool in the FIRST robotics competition, and want to expand on that over the next year. I maintain a few simple mobile apps that generate a tiny amount of revenue. Could really use some help here! I had a bunch of ECs back in college, and I still help out with them from time to time, but I honestly haven't done much since leaving.
Undergrad school/major: "EECS" at top public engineering school (one of U Mich, UIUC, UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech).
Other education/coursework: N/A
Race/nationality: Indian American (US Citizen -- born here).
Sex: M
Stats GMAT Score (include breakdown!): 750 (Q50, V42, AWA 5)
Undergrad GPA: 3.47
MBA Info Goal of MBA: Primary goal: transition into a management oriented role at my current company. Secondarily, I feel like I have a solid grasp of the technical side of things, but I'd really like to learn more about how a business runs and operates. I think fleshing out my business knowledge could really help with boosting the quality/reach of my side projects and help me start a business someday.
Target schools: HBS, GSB, Wharton, Booth, Sloan. I know this list is pretty lofty, but with my compensation/career trajectory the way it currently is, it feels like going anywhere else would be hard to justify.
Questions:
-My undergrad GPA isn't all that great, but my school has a fairly notorious grade deflation policy. My GPA was just shy of 3.5, but in one of my school's toughest majors and still qualifies as Magna Cum Laude. Is there any way to express this to adcoms? We went through school on fixed curves for many engineering classes in a way that isn't done at most other schools. I also have a strong upward trend (repeat 4.0 my last few semesters at school), and one specific outlier of a semester in which I had a medical injury.
-With my background, getting the job I have was extremely difficult. Furthermore, it's been relatively tough to perform well when my team has a completely different background than me (think CS/Statistics PhD or years of industry experience). Most of my impact has come from filling gaps in how the team operates (we're not wanting for technical talent, but there are organizational gaps where I have been able to add value), which is also what inspired me to pursue an MBA and write the GMAT. Is there a way to express this in my application without sounding stupidly arrogant? I'm planning on asking my boss for a letter of rec at some point -- maybe I can just leave this to him in his letter, and ask that he talks about it?
-I know being an Indian male is pretty much the worst thing possible for MBA applications. Given my somewhat low GPA and decent GMAT, do I have a shot at top schools? What parts of my application should I stress to overcome my shortcomings?
Thank you very much for the help -- appreciate it!
