My Background:
ORM (Asian American, US Citizen)
Undergrad from one of Vanderbilt, Rice, Emory
Graduated with a double major in Computer Science and English Literature
GPA - 3.3 (it is low, switched from another STEM major to Computer Science, which was very deflated at my school)
Test Scores - haven't taken any real tests yet, took practice GMATs but scored very low. (<500)
Current Years of Work Experience: 3
Extracurriculars In College:
Co-Author on a research paper published in a reputable medical journal. Volunteered in a lab for a year and half and helped with clinical research to get the paper published
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) - obtained certification and volunteered for a year. Worked with EMT crews in the local area
Worked in a lab for 1.5 years and learned wet lab techniques. I worked on an abstract.
Model UN - briefly involved for a year
Hackathons - won an award at one of them
Current Extracurriculars:
(Not a lot, aiming to improve by the time I graduate)
- Board Member of an organization for early career professionals at my employer
- Trying to get some volunteering lined up (nothing yet, looking for something healthcare related)
Work Experience:
2 years as a software engineer at a Fortune 100 Pharmaceutical company (building Salesforce apps, data engineering, backend configuration)
1 year as product manager on a data strategy initiative at the pharma company to improve forecasting and data quality (heavy data and analytics focus, worked with data engineers).
I will have an additional year of experience as product manager by the time I apply. I will be a PM on a Generative AI initiative to help with internal corporate strategy at the F100 pharma company (will be working with pharma program managers, data engineers and data scientists)
My number one question: I will have two years of product management experience when I apply. Will I be seen by the admission committee as an Asian-American IT male? Or would my sector (Pharmaceuticals) and title (product manager) put me in the Healthcare/Pharma product manager bucket? I'm concerned about this because I know that Asian American IT males are very overrepresented. I want to know so that I can obtain non-IT related work experience that would further differentiate from other IT applicants (and bring me more in line with the Healthcare/Pharma industry designation)
My long term goal is to work in general management. I'm interested in become a pharma leader and running the operations of a business unit at large cap pharmaceutical company. I could also see myself in a senior strategy role in pharma.
I'm aiming for T15 US schools and maybe INSEAD/LBS (full time MBA). Thank you
