Profile info:
Demographics: Slovakian, currently living in Slovakia, Female
Education: University of the Arts London, London College of Communication - Documentary photography and photojournalism- awarded Upper Second class honors, years of study: 2018-2021, (UAL is one of the best universities for Arts in the world)
Other coursework: part qualified ACCA
GMAT: not yet taken, started preparing, aiming for a score of 750
Work experience:
1year 9months- Finance assistant while studying at Uni at a London based employee benefit start-up
1year 3months - Group financial controller at Revolut in London, got promoted after 11 months after successfully completed multiple projects and also because I was a key member of the team during periods when the team was severely understaffed , always top performer, automated lots of processes, responsible for multiple entities and for parts of the group consolidation and intercompany accounting, held learnings sessions on intercompany accounting for colleagues around the globe
11 months (and current job)- Venture Builder in the innovation department at a major bank in Slovakia - while working at Revolut I got an offer to move back to Slovakia and be a part of a newly established Venture Builder team. I have decided to take the offer as I wanted to apply my start-up/fin-tech experience, which I gained in London, in Slovakia. Also I felt like I need a job that is a bit more creative. I have helped to set up the Venture Builder concept and currently I am driving the creation of a new fintech Venture, which aims to increase financial literacy and help people become more financially resilient.
Extracurricular activities:
- Had an exhibition in the OXO gallery in London, where I exhibited my series "Burning out". 'Burning out' is a combination of performative portraits, still lives, personal archive images and handwritten text documenting the exhaustion, pressure and stress leading to the feeling of almost burning out at the age of 23.
- Photographed the backstage of major fashion shows at London fashion week, Paris fashion week, Bratislava Fashion live.
- lead team which won second place, awarded by Google, in the CEE open banking hackathon
Post MBA goals:
- to move back to the CEE region and try to help emerging start-ups to be successful in their efforts to solve social or economical challenges of this region.
Target schools:
Stanford, Berkeley Haas, Harvard, Oxford Said, Insead
Specific questions:
Do you believe I have a chance to also receive scholarships/fellowships?
Am I a part of an under-represented group as a female from Slovakia?
Is my BA degree from arts school to my advantage or is it more of a disadvantage?
I have been working full-time while studying full-time so I dont have much extracurricular activities. Are those that I listed enough?

The application process is truly holistic, and committees will look at your stats (GPA and GMAT), work experience, and extracurriculars.
Your GPA must be strong, considering your Upper Second Class Honors, so that is a good start. Your target GMAT of 750 would be excellent, so hopefully you can at least exceed a 700. I suggest taking it up to 3-4 times. You have nothing to lose since schools will only look at your highest score. And even a slight increase can boost your profile. Otherwise, you may still want to illustrate to the schools that you have the academic ability to succeed in the classroom, especially because of a non-quant background. You could showcase your quant ability in your resume, your recommenders could do the same in their recommendations, or you could even take a supplemental course such as stats or calculus.
Your work experience sounds solid and diverse, and it is nice you have already been promoted. However, the average years of work experience is closer to 5, so if you choose to apply with fewer years, make sure you demonstrate why now is the time. And because of your lighter experience, it’s even more important to show you have made an impact and demonstrated leadership there. Ideally this will be supported by strong recommendation letters as well. It will also be important to explain why you want your MBA, and to also illustrate the skills you already have which are transferable. Be sure your story makes sense, and is realistic and specific.
Regarding extracurriculars, make sure to really emphasize your leadership roles you have taken on. You have some good ones to mention, but to answer your question, try to focus on one that really illustrates leadership.
If you continue to strengthen your profile, you do have a chance at some of these schools, but they are extremely competitive, and each school simply does not have the room to admit all the world's qualified applicants. It will be even more of a challenge to gain a scholarship, but if your application is much stronger than most others, you have a chance. In general, I suggest applying to several schools, including reach, target and safety. Hopefully they will see that you have a compelling story and are someone who will add value to the classroom and community. And yes, it is a small bonus that you are from an underrepresented region like Slovakia.
