Hello -
I would love to get an idea of where I stand in terms of getting into my target business schools
Background:
- White
- Male
- 750 GMAT
- 3.35 GPA from a top 3 public school (i.e Berkley, Michigan, UVA) degree was in Physics
You have my respect with the Physics major-- and I think adcom will view the 3.35 a bit more favorable with that major.- In college I was in the Students Astronomical Society and did outreach with children and tutoring of students at my university. I was also in a social fraternity.
I'd emphasize the leadership and community service part of this more than the social.... for B school applications - Work Experience: 5 years of work experience as a software engineer. Last 3 years was as a mobile app software engineer at a large US online travel agency (i.e. Priceline/Expedia). Also currently the QA manager and head of software testing for all of mobile at my company.
- Through work volunteered by being matched up with an underprivileged student in my area and helped them learn to read through 1 hr calls for the entire school year once a week (1 year)
that's awesome! this could be something to have somewhere in application-- whether resume or essay as a tangible example of giving back and having impact- Letters of Rec: Should be able to get a very good recommendation from my boss who's title is "Director of Technology" and should be able get another solid rec as well
try to get from another supervisory role person who can speak to a different side of you than your boss-- alternatively-- if you do work closely with a volunteer agency and they know your work well for them-- that could be another option to show leadership outside of work too.Target Schools:
- Harvard
- Stanford
- Wharton
- Booth
- Kellogg
- Columbia
- Sloan
- Haas
- Ross
The devil is in the details here-- your stats get you considered at all these places-- and then it becomes how well did you do explaining your WHY-- why MBA, why NOW, why this program? We at Stratus help our clients do this and also help to think about best fit programs for your career goals. Sounds like you want a lot of leadership-- all these programs also give that but I especially like what GSB, HBS and Kellogg offer in terms of leadership resources-- although you may feel differently after you research-- the key is to do that NOW while students are still in their programs on campus. Ask a GSB student about Leadership Labs or a Kellogg Student about the Business Leadership club. Having those details and those connections will help you present in a more compelling way. Now is actually a great time to start the process of working with a consultant and we'd be glad to do a free consult to help you see how we could help you. Don't make the mistake of thinking your GMAT and grades are all you need-- take the time to also submit outstanding applications! Career goals: the goal of my MBA is to better position myself to be a leader in the technology space. I have a good foundation of technical knowledge, as I have gotten into management over the last year I have come to realize business acumen becomes the limiting factor in the industry and I would like to gain skills that will help me be an effective leader in at a large tech company.
Thank you in advance!
