· Demographics: White Male, US Citizen, age 30 at matriculation
· Education: Attended low-ranked state school, 3.99 GPA in Economics. Minimal masters-level coursework related to receiving teaching credential, all with a 4.0 average. No degree granted for post-secondary work.
· GMAT Score: 730 (Q45,V44,IR7). Considering whether retaking might make sense given the low quant score. Mock quant scores weren't much higher, typically around Q46 and once a Q49. I did get As in numerous quant-intensive courses as part of undergrad studies (calculus, econometrics, various statistics courses, advanced micro/macroeconomics etc.) and also was a math teacher, so hoping that some of that may offset quant doubts.
· Work experience: 6 years total experience at matriculation. 3 years teaching middle school math through Teach For America, and currently in year 3 of working for a small consulting firm that does work directly with underperforming schools and districts nationwide, typically on contracts through state education agencies. Generally I am working with and coaching administrators and teachers at schools as they develop and implement strategic school improvement plans. I have good impact that I can speak to in both my teaching role and current job.
I presently act as the project lead on a few large, statewide school improvement initiatives and manage project teams of up to 7 people. I've received one formal promotion, and the switch from my teaching job might not technically be a promotion, but it was certainly equivalent to one in terms of advancement in seniority and responsibility. I was promoted to my current role in half of the typical timeline and am younger than almost everybody in my equivalent role. In typical consulting terms, my current title is equivalent to that of an associate level position, though my responsibilities are closer to those of an engagement manager.
· Extracurricular activities: Not a whole lot to highlight here, unfortunately. I wasn't the most-involved during undergrad, but was a member of the student council for my college (not the whole university, just the smaller college within the university) throughout my senior year. Minimal engagement otherwise through varied, non-sustained volunteering with a couple of non profit organizations.
Post college, I was somewhat involved while a teacher, acting as the student council advisor and coach for the basketball and baseball teams. No significant extracurricular activities since then, excepting perhaps my heavy involvement in the backcountry skiing community where I live. Currently on track to become a professionally-certified avalanche course instructor, which is a typically a multi-year process (hoping to someday become a certified mountain guide as a passion project).
· Post-MBA goals: Short-term consulting, longer term I would like to return to an education-oriented organization or NGO in some sort of leadership capacity. Places like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation come to mind here.
· Target schools: Haas, Ross, Kellogg, Columbia, MIT, Yale, (maybe) Dartmouth. Planning to submit all for R2 of this year, and will apply via consortium for all but MIT.
Thank you!
