Hello,
I am looking for a
profile review. I recently took my GMAT and I am finally ready to start the application process. Targeting Fall 2021 start.
I am a 29 year old South Asian (Indian) male living and working in the US. I am a US citizen.
I have a B.S. and an M.S in Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, one of the top Engineering schools in the country. Undergrad GPA - 3.4 and Master’s GPA 3.6.
GMAT Scores - 700 (Q48,V37)
Work experience:
I have 7+ years of strong work experience in the aviation industry in the US. I have worked in the areas of aircraft design, aviation consulting, and airlines. For the last 5 years, I have been working for a major US airline as a Data Science Consultant focusing on Machine Learning and Optimization. In the last 5 years, I have been promoted three times and all the roles have been a good combination of technical and strategy work. Currently, I lead a team of 3 people. I have worked on several projects that involved heavy collaboration with international partners, so I have been decently exposed to large European corporations and their business. As far as special achievements go, I have led the development and launch of many successful products in my current role. These products have saved the company millions of dollars.
Extracurricular activities:
- Apart from my day job, I have always been interested in investments and trading. I have launched a startup in the financial market space in collaboration with a few other teammates. After spending about a year and a half we had to shut it down because of lack of funding. This venture gave me a lot of great entrepreneur experience and the failure to successfully source investors and put a business model around the product made me realize that I lack business knowledge and inspired me to go to business school.
- My wife and I also manage a small business of our own. The business is around content creation and marketing.
- Work as a part-time photographer.
- Presented at several international technical conferences with an audience of 100+
- Hold a leadership position in an Employee Resource Group in my current company. Lead a team of 6 people. Heavily engaged with the local community and other large businesses around the city to collaborate on pressing issues and increase the value proposition of the city from a business standpoint.
- Have done some volunteering work in the local community, but not a whole lot.
· Post-MBA goals: Private Equity/Venture Capital/Consulting/Strategy with a focus on technology and the aviation sector. I am still figuring out my exact vision and goals. I want the MBA to supplement my current career rather than start a new career. I am passionate about technology, and aviation, but at the same time like the business side of things more than the technical side. Hence looking for a combination in the above areas. Especially interested in PE/VC in the aviation start-up space.
· Target schools:
I am mainly interested in a part-time MBA, specifically a Weekend Program. My target schools are Northwestern Kellogg, Chicago Booth, NYU Stern, and Berkeley Haas.
Also interested in London Business School and Columbia for a full-time program.
Give my background, I am still debating between a part-time program and a full-time program. I am having a hard time convincing myself on the ROI of a full-time program, given that the compensation and roles I am currently getting match or maybe even exceed, in some cases, the average starting salaries of MBA grads from top tier schools. But obviously, compensation is not the only reason I am considering an MBA. So I’d like to know if pivoting into PE/VC or Strategy type of roles via a part-time MBA program is possible?
Based on my research a 700 GMAT is maybe good for a part-time top tier program, but definitely not adequate for a full-time top tier program. However, LBS does seem to have a lower GMAT average compared to schools like Columbia. So given my background, a graduate degree from a top-tier engineering school, and current scores, is LBS achievable? How about other schools I mentioned for part-time? I don’t mind re-taking the GMAT as I may be able to score 730/740 (based on my practice tests) but I don’t want to invest more time unless I have to.
Thanks,
