Dear Applicants,
Very recently, I had a conversation with an applicant who had faced multiple rejects from Top Schools in his previous attempts.
His background: GMAT 760, Indian Engineer, 6 Years of work experience in Family business.
His Main Concern: Top MBA Programs DO NOT Consider applicants that come from Family businesses. He asked me repeatedly if he should even consider applying. He may have spoken with some industry experts who recommended that he gave up the MBA Plan.
My Suggestions to him and to all the readers who belong to similar backgrounds: You are absolutely right if you think that you are not as Adcom Friendly as someone with a Top Tier consulting background or may be someone from a Fortune 500 company. However, that does not mean that you are ruled out. If your premise is that a Top TIER MBA Program cannot add value to the aspirations of someone from family business, then my question for the Senior Leadership of the business schools is “Is an Education in business even worth the time and Money?”
Any top tier MBA Education can and will have a very significant impact on how you make Micro to Macro level decisions in a family business environment. If an applicant showcases strong clarity of thought, and knows his way forward, why should any business school deny the access to education?
An Important Assumption: Your family business isn’t limited to You + Mom/Dad + Janitor( 4 Team members in total). If that is the case, then may be the business does not have scalable characteristics or the family hasn’t decided to create scalable characteristics in the enterprise. If your business belongs to this category, and if you have been a part of it for over 3 to 5 years, then your resume will not have enough meat in it. You are just a part of an environment that generates stable cashflow. It is a great setting as long as your family is happy but your B-school story will not be a great hit.
If you belong to a family business that has offered you good managerial-level learning opportunities, and have a valid GMAT Score, get in touch with us. We will be happy to knock whatever doors we can.
Thanks, Jatin
