Dear Applicants,
I have learnt a lot from you in the past 11 years, and am writing to share some of the important things that the new applicants will probably not know or will pay importance to. We are roughly 40 to 45 days away from Round 2 deadlines of the majority of the Top MBA Programs.
One thing to remember in the next 45 days is that – when you are applying to the TOP MBA Programs of the world- Your goal is not to just prepare a well written application. Language is not as important as the CONTENT IS. I mean- you are not doing it just to be prepared for a 500 word input. NO! Absolutely not! You are preparing for a WHOLE NEW EXPRESSION FOR – HOW ARE YOU LOVE WITH THAT SCHOOL? ( this will be the signature essay in most of the applications, and a lot of applicants will be tempted to making glorified brochures for these programs.
They are not interested in a BROCHURE. "Why this school?" is not a question designed to fulfil the narcissist needs of the MBA Admissions Committees. They are simply interested in finding how "How will their school help you meet your future aspirations?"
Now- I am not suggesting that I will give you a simple formula and enable you to create a response in 3 days. That is NOT POSSIBLE! What I am suggesting is- Start working on understanding that school comprehensively!
They will ask you a simple question – “WHY DID YOU PICK US?” and your depth of research will help you address the intricacies of the research needed to get a GREAT RESPONSE. Your response should make a clear case for “YOUR CURRENT WEAKNESSES + HANDICAPS + MBA From that Program = Your SPECIFIC Future aspirations”
If you are tempted to pick up the most popular attributes of the schools from their websites, drop that temptation. Instead, address “How will that attribute help me, and in which of the current weaknesses?”
If you are well researched, it will be reflected in your essays and in your passion for that program. I am not a wishful thinker or a philosopher. What I am trying to express here is – There are times you will get into fights with interviewers who will try to take you down while asking you questions such as “WHY OUR SCHOOL?” or “How will an MBA help you ?”
And your enthusiasm and your willingness to participate in that particular program will really make you go past the resistance that you currently face while writing essays or even while networking with the current students.
So many current students will refuse to talk to you, and your response rate will very likely be between 20 to 30%. That does not mean that you will NOT WRITE THE NEXT EMAIL OR A FOLLOW UP EMAIL . This will be a continuous learning experience that will prepare you for the expression on both essays and interviews.
If you start shopping for finding solutions to current weaknesses, you will be building connections with strangers and finding opportunities to seek help, information, and doing whatever it takes to get accepted. This will significantly help you in your MBA life when you will be exploring internships, full time jobs, and career changes.
No ONE can bypass the rigour of this process.
No ONE SHOULD bypass the rigour of this process.
Before you pay USD 180,000 to a business school, get yourself ready. Even after accepting the entire Tuition Fee from you, the TOP Programs of this world will not spoon-feed you in networking, and employability. You will have to be resourceful from day one.
