I guess that shatters my theory =P. but hey if 50Q is what the man says, then who are you to argue?

seriously though, no one beside GMAC knows exactly how the questions are weighted/scored in the real GMAT. I wouldn't be surprised if companies like Kaplan and Princeton Review have done some major research in developing their CATs.

If you feel like you got a lot of questions wrong and still got a high score, you can take comfort in knowing that you're only missing the tough questions.
