Hi guys,

I am a bit confused over the scoring algorithm here. I have finished the GMAT with a Q49 V39 and got a score of 710. However, when I was looking through the gmatclub blog, and the scoring chart as well, it shows that the Q49 V39 is a score of 720. How is this possible? Should I contact the GMAC guys?

Hi,

IMO there is no need to go to GMAC for this matter as scores of GMAT are not absolute. I mean Q49 and V39 will not always be 710 or 720. The scoring pattern of GMAT is complex and there are various factors such as streak of wrong answers, number of experimental questions got correct, and few others, that govern your score. So comparing your scores on the basis of Q and V splits is not useful at all. There are many moderators/students on the GMAT club who have same splits but different scores.

Your total score is based on your percentile scores within the Quant and the Verbal. There are more percentiles than there are number scores for most of the scoring.

What this means is that a 49 on the Quant on my test may be different than a 49 on your test. There is basically a "high 49" which is a higher percentile than is a "low 49." Each of these scores shows up as a 49 scaled score for Quant but the percentile could vary by a few percentile.

You can refer to this detailed post from Veritas on how the scoring algorithm works
