The two modifiers have to placed correctly..
1) During the felicitation
This should modify ---the war veteran meeting mother
Should modify the soldier.

Only C and D correct point 1 by getting it ahead of the sentence.
C correctly modifies point 2 too

Don't you think in option C there is still ambiguity whether the mother was tortured or the soldier was.

I am a little confused. Can you please explain.
Thanks!

The war veteran remembered meeting the mother of a soldier who had been tortured brutally by the enemy forces during the felicitation ceremony.

(A) The war veteran remembered meeting the mother of a soldier who had been tortured brutally by the enemy forces during the felicitation ceremony.- meaning issue- soldier was not tortured during the ceremony.
(B) The war veteran remembered meeting the mother of a soldier during the felicitation ceremony who had been tortured brutally by the enemy forces. - incorrect use of who.
(C) During the felicitation ceremony, the war veteran remembered meeting the mother of a soldier who had been tortured brutally by the enemy forces.- perfect, correct choice.
(D) During the felicitation ceremony, the war veteran remembered meeting a soldier’s mother whom the enemy forces had brutally tortured. - again meaning issue - mother was not tortured
(E) The war veteran remembered meeting the mother of a soldier during his felicitation ceremony, a soldier who had been brutally tortured by the enemy forces.- here 'a soldier' is incorrectly modifying the war veteran.

Can you please explain why 'whom' is wrong here? Mother is the object and hence we should have whom

Hi all,

still don't understand why C . As said, I think in option C there is still ambiguity whether the mother was tortured or the soldier was.

During the felicitation ceremony, the war veteran remembered meeting the mother of a soldier who had been tortured brutally by the enemy forces.

I, reading the phrase, really do not understand where is such ambiguity. It is a question of meaning. It is also impossible for who read the sentence thinking that the mother had been tortured. It does make any sense.

Often the students overthink that there is something hidden where actually there is not.

regards
