I am confused between C and E. Can anyone help?

C is not possible because is too extreme. C says: the only source of information about the instrument-making techniques of that period. This is not true.

In fact, you have not NEW information about the music of the time once the instrument is restored. At the same time, the instrument cannot be played without restored.

BUT if have the instrument without restored AND no playing it (because you can not) you still could have information of the music of the time: for instance looking at the shape of it or if it made of a particular wood.

Regards

I am confused between C and E as well.
The stem says "restoring such an instrument destroys ALL of the information that researchers could obtain from it about eighteenth-century instrument-making techniques."

Doesn't this mean C) is correct? If the instrument is not the only source, why would restoring it destroy ALL of the information about instrument-making techniques?
C) Eighteenth-century instruments are the only source of information about the instrument-making techniques of that period.

The sentence states:
Eighteenth-century instruments cannot be played without being restored, however, and restoring such an instrument destroys all of the information that researchers could obtain from it about eighteenth-century instrument-making techniques.

Here, it refers to the instrument. After restoration, the instrument can not be used to provide information about instrument making techniques. However, there might be other sources such as manuscripts. If the statement had 'all information possible' or something that extreme, then C would make more sense. In the current format, C is extreme as there is no reference of instruments being the single source of information.

Playing eighteenth-century music on the instruments of that period provides valuable information about how the music originally sounded. Eighteenth-century instruments cannot be played without being restored, however, and restoring such an instrument destroys all of the information that researchers could obtain from it about eighteenth-century instrument-making techniques.

If the statements above are true, which of the following must be true on the basis of them?

(A) Eighteenth-century instruments cannot be used to provide information about the original techniques used in playing such instruments if they have been restored.

likhith
Why not option A, it says that 18c instrument cannot be provide information about original playing technique if it has been played restored.
likhith , the subject of the conclusion is information about original techniques that were used to make (construct, build, assemble) the instruments.

Option A refers to information about original techniques that were used to play the instrument.

Hope that helps.

can anybody explain why can't I choose D?

D is incorrect because it talks about more information while the passage is very specific about the information e.g the techniques ..so it's a may be true case ..not must be true case

(A) Eighteenth-century instruments cannot be used to provide information about the original techniques used in playing such instruments if they have been restored.
We can play an instrument after restoring it and learn about the original techniques used in playing these instruments. This is incorrect.

(B) Eighteenth-century instruments that have been restored can provide information only about how eighteenth-century music originally sounded
This statement states that the restored instrument can provide only ..... this information. The use of "only " makes this choice extreme, and thus, it is incorrect.

(C) Eighteenth-century instruments are the only source of information about the instrument-making techniques of that period.
No, there can be other ways of knowing about instrument-making techniques such as manuscripts etc.

(D) An eighteenth-century instrument that has not been restored can provide more information than can one that has been restored.
We don't know what information here is referring to. thus, This choice is not correct

(E) An eighteenth-century instrument cannot serve as a source of new information about eighteenth-century instrument-making techniques once it can be played
If the instrument is played, that means it has been restored. Thus, that instrument cannot provide new information about the 18th century instrument making. This is the correct answer choice.

Correct answer choice is E.
