When I took my GMAT the unofficial score report stated Q49 - 81st percentile.
I didn't bother any further, given that the magic 80% split was reached.
However, I just downloaded my official score report again:
Not sure if they update the percentiles on it of if I had just previously missed it but the new percentile shown is 79%.
Whereas it usually wouldn't bother me I now start to wonder if this might indeed have a negative impact on the application?
When providing my score with the applications I assume I'll have to state the official 79% rather than the unofficial 81% that I've got on paper?

Hi Cosmopolitan,
I think you have nothing to worry about. A total of 720 and a quant scaled score of 49 is really good. Needless to say, you would have to report the official scores and percentiles only. But there no need to worry. At this point I would recommend that you focus on other aspects of your applications - the recommendations and essays. They would have a greater impact on you chances of getting into the top B-schools rather than the 2 percentile point in quants that you're worried about.

I wouldn't sweat it. The percentiles are constantly recalculated based on the pool of people who take the exam. The trend has been shifting towards more international students who are very good at math -- and so the number of people scoring very high in math has increased relative to the past. Hence, to score at the 80%ile more -- requires a higher and higher raw score. It's not surprising to see what used to be an 80%il score is now a 79%ile.
