Quant/Verbal Imbalance

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum so please forgive me if I'm posting this to the wrong forum. Anyway I've been studying for about 3 months and have been scoring around 700 on my practice exams. The problem is that while I've done well on the verbal section (93rd, 96th, and 99th percentiles so far), I have struggled greatly with the quant section (73rd, 63rd, and 26th (yikes!) percentiles so far). I'm a bit perplexed by this since I scored 99th percentile on the ACT math. I guess I'm not as smart as I thought I was.

Basically I have trouble finishing each math question in under two minutes. It usually takes me a while to figure out the right approach and by the time I do I don't have enough time to complete the mechanical calculations. So either I end up taking around 3 minutes or I rush and make dumb mistakes.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'm trying to go to a top 5 b-school and I'm afraid they will look down on my quant score, even if the overall score meets their threshold.

First things first, ACT/SAT scores don't matter at all. They are for a completely different group and, as you noted, the percentiles are a poor predictor. As for your problem with quant, how many problems are you doing a week? If you are struggling that much with quant you should be grinding through as many quant problems as possible, understanding and learning from your mistakes along the way. That is the secret to doing well on quant - hard work and tons of practice problems.

Well during the semester I was only doing around 40/50 practice questions a week, but since I graduated last week I've been doing at least that many per day. I also have almost completed the Manhattan Advanced GMAT Quant Guide, which seems to have helped somewhat. I'm taking the GMAT in about two weeks and am able to dedicate almost all of my time exclusively to studying. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks!

After watching through some videos, you'll get a better sense of timing. Different approaches can lead to different times. Oftentimes it helps to see things from a different perspective so you can adjust yourself accordingly.

Also work on building your mental stamina. Staying psychological tough-minded is needed.
