Official Explanation
This is a direct application of the Pythagorean Theorem, \(a^2 + b^2 = c^2,\) which relates the side lengths in a right triangle. Notice that to solve for \(x\), you are finding the hypotenuse— \(c\) in the formula—but that to solve for \(y\), you are finding one of the legs – a or b in the formula. \(4^2 + 5^2 =\\
x^2,\) so \(16 + 25 = x^2,\) and \(x =\sqrt{41}\)
Furthermore, \(3^2 + y^2 = 7^2,\) so \(9 + y^2 = 49, \) making
Because
(A) is greater.
