Please look at the below statement:

Three Ivy League schools have pulled out of E-du, an education consortium, offering undergraduate students the opportunity to take online courses for university credit after professors and alumni complained that the program would cheapen the prestige of a degree.

Though there are other errors too in the sentence but look at the usage of would, is it correct? the statement is in present time frame as well.
Hi Gagan, let's cull out the portion of the sentence that uses would:

professors and alumni complained that the program would cheapen the prestige of a degree.

This is a valid construct and falls in the "would" for a "future in the past" situation mentioned by Chelsey above.

p.s. Our book EducationAisle Sentence Correction Nirvana discusses the usage of "would", its application and examples. If you or someone is interested, PM me your email-id; I can mail the corresponding section.
