For background, I'm a medical student with very little time to study for the GMAT. With very little information on what the GMAT is, I thought that maybe I could tackle it in the 2 week winter break I have and take it on 1/2/23. However, seeing how my scores are right now, and what my target is (740), it does not feel realistic to take it in a week. I'm planning to apply fall of 2023, so my last chance to take the GMAT would be around August I believe. My current dilemmas are as follow, and I'd love some opinions about what I should do next:
1) I will not have time to study from Jan-June of 2023. I will have around 2 weeks during the summer when I can study, then I can study after work from July-August (2 months if I'm taking it end of Aug). I worry that the 6 months I won't study will make the past 2 weeks of studying fruitless. I'm not sure how important continuity is for GMAT studying.
2) My practice test scores are below, and it feels like I've hit my plateau, even though I know that maybe I haven't studied enough to hit my "plateau". I wonder if I need a change in strategy/approach. I've done all the medium & hard questions on SC and CR in the OG verbal book, and all the questions in the prob solving questions in the OG quant book. I've also done some kaplan practice questions here and there. I do try to error log, but it seems like the GMAT covers SUCH a breadths of questions that I might just need lots more practice (which I unfortunately don't have much time for). I am taking practice tests frequently because I thought it's a good idea to practice timing and continuity. But if I'm going to delay my test date to August, I'm going to save the rest of the GMAT official practice tests.
3) I see on the forum that the actual GMAT is much more difficult, and more unpredictable the higher the score goes. I worry that by the time I'm done studying in August, my score won't be at my goal but I'll be out of time.

Hi yuniie.
So, your solution is to prep more effectively by working topic by topic. To master a topic
- first, review the concepts and strategies associated with the topic
- then do practice questions involving that one topic UNTIMED until you're achieving high accuracy
- finally, work on reducing the time per question until you're correctly answering questions involving that topic at test pace
Then, move on to the next topic and do the same thing.

You're not all that far from your 740 score goal at this point, and the GMAT doesn't get THAT much harder as you score higher. With the amount of preparation you described, you should be able to get to your goal score long as you prepare efficiently.

Probably fair to say there is more room for improvement on the Verbal than the Quant. A Q51 may be harder to get than a V42, for example. That being said, I did have a student who get a Q50 V40 (740). That student's Quant was already a Q50 on an actual exam before I started tutoring them. They went from a V31 to a V40 in about 30 days which improved their score from a 680 to a 740.
In your case, a Q49 coupled with a V42 could potentially get you a 740 more easily. If you feel your fundamentals are solid, consider working on your solving approach. May boost your score quickly. Had a 6-hour student who retook a V41 and got a V45 in about 10 days.
