Ok, this may be a silly question, but I don't believe I have seen the answer around here.

If you get admitted R1 and have apps in R2 at other schools, how long do you usually have to inform your R1 admits of your decision? Just curious if there ever exists a situation where you are waiting to hear from an R2 school and your opportunity for accepting the R1 offer expires...

Is this possible?

Sam - the R1 offer expirations differ by school. Yes, it is quite possible that your R1 offer will expire before you hear back from R2 schools. Usually, most schools will give you an extension though. Depends by school though.

Interesting, seems like you could be faced with quite an issue if you were waiting on one...

Do school ever deny a request for an extension? Seems like the school would easily realise why you were waiting. I know if I was an AdCom, I would feel spurned if I knew someone was waiting it out to hear from another school...

I think all the school's adcoms KNOW that you applied to more than one school, so if you gently and politely ask for an extension so that you can "carefully evaluate your difficult choices", they should understand and grant you an extension.

I may have to do this for UCLA as the deadline is very close to Haas' admit weekend and it's before Kellogg's if I get into Kellogg.

All schools publish them with their deadlines, so if you have an idea of which schools you will be applying to next year, I recommend you take a look and see what their dates look like.
