Hi,
Glad you are doing your due diligence! Yale, like many of the top programs, has strengths in a lot of areas and rarely are schools known for just one thing. For example, Kellogg is often known as a Marketing school but has some of the best placement rates for Consulting firms. So sometimes you have to dig a little bit more into the numbers -- I bet if you looked at the employment reports for most of the top programs, Consulting and Finance are in the top 3 of post-MBA careers. They are just really popular career options from any top program. If you were interested in Finance, then I think schools like Wharton, Columbia, Booth should also be on your list.
Re. Yale SOM specifically, from what I know, Finance and Consulting are very popular and strong there and many have traditionally considered it a "Finance" school - but I know they also have strength in areas like Technology and Non-Profit and Entrepreneurship. I think another thing you'll find is that Yale will give you a really solid general management background, regardless of which industry you choose, and in particular they place a lot of emphasis on taking a global perspective to management.
One last thing I'll encourage you to do is to talk to SOM students and alums to see what they think the school really should be known for! And if you feel like you need some more help narrowing down your target list, you may want to check out our free school selection guide here:
