Happy Sunday!

Let's say I have this question...
|x+5|=2

Why do I see most people solve this type of question in this way...
First case --> x+5=2
Second case --> x+5=-2

Instead of putting the negative sign on what was inside the absolute value bars (and distributing the negative)?
First case --> x+5=2
Second case --> -(x+5)=2

Many thanks :)

Both approaches are equivalent. If you do it the first way and write x + 5 = -2 for the second case, you can multiply each side by -1 to obtain -(x + 5) = 2. I actually prefer the second way, because I label my cases are "x + 5 is positive" and "x + 5 is negative". If x + 5 is negative, then |x + 5| = -(x + 5), so I write -(x + 5) = 2.
