Is the AWA supposed to be added to your GMAT score? Or is it a separate metric that grad schools look at? How is it viewed? and how important is it?

AWA is not related to your normal 200-800 GMAT scores. You can do as well as 800 for GMAT but score a 0 for AWA.
On the other hand, some schools will like to see that you have some degree of english language ability to communicate. Thus, they look at your AWA as a gauge. Of course, they are some schools who claimed that they do not care about your AWA scores at all.
Nevertheless, the advice would be to score least a mediocre 3.
