I don’t think that’s a probable concern. If anything the current GMAT exam is more robust and more grueling. If you can do the classic gmat, the focus format should be more manageable though again, the test is NOT available until Q4 2023 and nobody even knows how the test will be and how the results compare but I don’t see any reason for MBA programs (many of which have been making gmat optional) to shoot them selves in the foot and reduce options for applicants. Applicants are business school customers. Schools want more application volume. It would be foolish to reduce it.

Hi All, I recently took the GMAT and scored my goal of 750+. However, I’m thinking about holding off on applying for 1-2 more years to get more work experience. I’m concerned that in a couple of years time, programs may not accept the legacy GMAT scores and I’ll have to retake the Focus Edition. Has there been any indication that legacy scores will not be valid and accepted for 5 years as they have in the past?

bb Do you see any reason that admissions committees would have preference towards the newer version? Like you said, the current version is more grueling so in my mind as long as they are accepting it there’s no reason for me to retake the new exam.

I do not see any logical or practical reasons for admissions teams to stop excepting the current format.

The new test is not adding any material or question types. It’s simply removes geometry and sentence correction and incorporates integrated reasoning into the overall score.

Thinking about it going forward in a few years, adcoms will be comparing scores based on percentiles. If you get a good percentile, I don’t think you need to retake a worry about it. Schools even accept executive assessment and GRE. I don’t think there’s going to be an issue with acceptance.

Hi gmattest200,

The current GMAT is the one that admissions committees are (very) familiar with, so it is very, very unlikely that they will prefer the Focus Edition. As other forum members have pointed out in this thread, you can take either version.

Hi gmattest200,

To start, a 750 is an outstanding Score - and with it, you can comfortably apply to any Business Schools that interest you (and at any point within 5 years of from when you took your Official GMAT).

The GMAT has gone through some noteworthy changes over the years (for example, in 2012 when IR replaced the Issue Essay and in 2018 when the Exam was shortened and the section-order options were added) - and Official Scores from the 'prior' versions of the Exam (at that time) were still valid for 5 years (and still used by thousands and thousands of Applicants to get into Business School). This is all meant to say that you should have nothing to worry about regarding the use of your current Official GMAT results when you apply to Business School at some point in the next several years.

Thanks everyone. Do you think that schools will prefer scores on the Focus Edition? I’ve seen some comments on the internet that since business school rankings are based partially on scores, they may favor the Focus Edition scores since that will be what they report for the rankings. bb EMPOWERgmatRichC MartyTargetTestPrep

Schools want high scores on the test that affects their rankings. So, if your application hinges on your scoring very high on the GMAT to tempt schools to accept you because of your GMAT score, then I guess it's possible that schools would prefer your score to be on the version of the test that affects their rankings.

However, for anyone whose GMAT score is relatively close to or below a school's average, which test you take will make no difference.

Furthermore, it's not clear that legacy GMAT scores will cease affecting rankings any time soon. It may be that they will affect rankings for the next few years until few applicants are using them.

Hi gmattest200,

The question that you're asking pops-up any time a Grad Exam goes through a major change (some version of "will Schools prefer one version of the Test Score - the 'old one' or the 'new one' - more than the other?"). The answer has always been "No." The more relevant question is "since Business Schools consider far more than just an Applicant's GMAT/GRE/EA Score, what ELSE can you do (before you apply) to strengthen your OVERALL application?" Your 750 is an outstanding result (so I want to reiterate that you're in position to apply to ANY Business Schools that interest you) - and in the future, if you don't receive an invite to attend a School that you apply to, then that outcome will have nothing to do with the fact that you took the version of the GMAT that was available in early 2023.

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

If you are planning to apply in R1, the Focus Edition may not be available to take. The Focus Edition will come out in Q4 whereas some deadlines may be in September.

I’m probably going to apply next year. I took the GMAT this Spring, but I’ve decided it’s more beneficial for my overall application to get an extra year of work experience. That’s why I was concerned about acceptance of my GMAT score.

Hi gmattest200,

I don't see a situation where your 750 score from the current GMAT will not be accepted in 2 years. So, I think you are fine to keep this score and use it when you apply.
