Hi Coffeeloverfreak,

I haven't taken the GMAT yet, but I did visit my test center, and asked the test adminstrator about the do's and don'ts. As test centers are private entities who abide by ETS rules, the centers may have different rules. For instance, the test administrator at the center where I plan to take the test said, that the optional break is for a minimum of 5 mins and for a maximum of 10 mins. Most students usually don't know that, and end up taking only a 5 min break. The center also offers you noise cancellation headsets, that should reduce the external noise that can occur when there are other students taking the test simultaneously. So don't forget to visit your test center atleast once, and feel familiar with the surroundings, and yes... good luck with your GMAT

It was all a bit intimidating for me as I have never done an exam under that level of security. I had to write out the rules in handwriting, have my picture taken by a video camera, leave my passport on the floor. The breaks rules were a bit unclear.

I can see why people often get a better score second time round, just because it is easier to be relaxed if you are familiar with all of the above.
