This is an excerpt from the chapter "Strengthen the Conclusion" in our book "EducationAisle Critical Reasoning Nirvana":

Patterns in Strengthen the Conclusion
Eliminate alternate cause to reach the conclusion
Let us say that the argument suggests a causal connection between X and Y:
An option that is likely to strengthen this causal relationship is the one that eliminates alternate cause “Z” to reach the conclusion “Y”.
Since we have to strengthen that X causes Y, an option that eliminates alternate cause “Z” as the reason for Y, is likely to be the correct answer

At the beginning of last year, the Government in country-X approved a plan to provide subsidy on sale of electric vehicles in the country, resulting in reduction of the sale-price of electric vehicles. In the year following the price reduction, the sales of electric vehicles increased by 10%. Clearly, the reduction of the sale-price resulted in increase in sales.
What, if true, would strengthen the argument?

Eliminate alternate cause to reach the conclusion

One correct answer to the above question is:
The extensive environmental awareness campaign over the last 1.5 years, sensitizing vehicle owners and prospective vehicle buyers on the adverse environmental impact of gasoline powered vehicles did not have any impact on the sales of electric vehicles.
Let us think about it. The sales of electric vehicles increased by 10%. The argument mentions that reduction of the sale-price of electric vehicles was the cause of increase in sales. However, an alternate cause for increase in sales of electric vehicles could be customer awareness about the adverse environmental impact of gasoline powered vehicles. However, since the question stems asks us to strengthen/support that reduction of the sale-price was the reason for increase in sales, the correct answer eliminates this alternate cause (customer awareness about the adverse environmental impact of gasoline powered vehicles) as the cause of increase in sales.
