Could someone please explain why in answer choice C, "and" is not required before inspired.
To me it looks like a list, RL stevenson demonstrated...,(missing and) inspired
or it could be
RL stevenson demonstrated...., inspiring.....
Where am I going wrong?
Hey
gandharvm,
In option C 'and' before 'Inspired' is not required as here 'inspired' is acting as a modifier instead of a verb.
Modifiers can be of 2 forms: one is the 'verb + ing' form such as 'inspiring' in option A and the other form is 'Verb + ed' form such as 'inspired' in option C.
There is one other crucial difference between A and C, and the difference is between 'Than him' and 'Than his own' in the ending of the sentence.
A) demonstrated conflict between the virtue of advanced civilization and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage, inspiring generations of authors who wrote in significantly different
times than him.
C) demonstrated conflict between the virtue of advanced civilization and the indiscipline of man in his savage stage, inspired generations of authors who wrote in significantly different times
than his own.
In option A we are comparing the writing of authors to 'him' - R L Stevenson and therefore answer A is wrong, whereas in option C we are comparing Writing of authors to 'His own' which means writing of R L Stevenson, making option C the right answer.
I hope this helps!
+1 Kudos if I was able to answer your query!
