I think the answer is D 99%
the reason is, we need a passive voice to show that someone else and not horses discussed greatest rivalries. Since in all answer choices HORSES are placed right after the modifier, it sounds like HORSES were discussing something..., yet D is the only choice that transfers the "discussing" action on someone else... away from horses
