I think E meaning is quite make sense. Why the answer is A?
I think the reason for not using E is the use of “so-that”. It is a cause and effect. So the correct usage in my opinion should be: “so-as”

Raoul saved so much money as to be able to maintain his lifestyle in the future despite being thrown out of business.

A. so much money as to be able maintain

B. so much money he can maintain

C. enough money that he maintain

D. money enough for the maintenance of

E. enough money so that he can maintain

Dear Abhi077,

Thank you for your question, but there is a "to" missing between "able " and "maintain" in option A , making it difficult to choose it as the correct answer. For A to be correct we should have ....able to maintain ...............instead we have ..........able maintain..... Please edit option A, Thank you.

A. Correct. Proper use of idiomatic expression.
B. Incorrect. 'So much' should be followed by 'That'.
C. Incorrect. 'maintain' must be replaced by 'maintains' since subject is singular.
D. Incorrect. enough should precede the noun 'money'.
E. Incorrect. 'can' must be replaced by 'could'.

There are two reasons why Option E is wrong. First, why not simply say ''enough to maintain'' generally the word ''enough has to follow ''to'' the usage of the phrase ''enough that'' is incorrect idiom or not an elegant diction. Second, since the main verb ''saved'' is in past tense, modal verb ''can'' is wrong, instead ''could'' should be used. This logic is similar usage of ''would'' when the reported speech is in past tense. ''will'' is used only when the reported speech is in present tense.

Thank You

Option Elimination -

A. so much money as to be able to maintain - so (cause) as to (effect) - ok.

B. so much money he can maintain - We need "that"

C. enough money that he maintain - we need so or "enough to be able to maintain."

D. money enough for the maintenance of - changes the meaning.

E. enough money so that he can maintain - we need "could" to match with the past "saved." future in past.
