I am trying to improve my writing and I would appreciate your feedback very much!
The following appeared as a part of an advertisement for Adams, who is seeking reelection as governor:
“Reelect Adams, and you will be voting for proven leadership in improving the state’s economy. Over the past year
alone, 70 percent of the state’s workers have had increases in their wages, 5,000 new jobs have been created, and
six corporations have located their headquarters here. Most of the respondents in a recent poll said they believed that
the economy is likely to continue to improve if Adams is reelected. Adams’s opponent, Zebulon, would lead our state
in the wrong direction, because Zebulon disagrees with many of Adams’s economic policies.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and
the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions
underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can
also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would
make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion.
The argument state that over past year Adams’s economic policies helped 70% of the stated workers to increase their wages, 5,000 new jobs have been created and 6 corporations have located their headquarters in their state . Hence the author believes that re-electing Adams will help to improve the economy of the state. The argument also state that the result of the recent poll shows that the economy is likely to improve under the leadership of Adams. Author also believes that Adams’s opponent , Zebulon, would lead state to wrong direction because he disagree with Adams’s economic policies. The author left out several other key factors which could have been the basis of this argument and left us with minimal information to arrive at its stated conclusion. Therefore , this argument is vague and rather unconvincing.
First , the argument readily assume that the economic conditions of the state is improved only under the leadership of Adams and it would not have improved if Adams was not elected. The author claims that due to economic policies introduced by the Adams helped to increase wages, create jobs opportunities and attracted corporations to locate their headquarters. This argument could have much more clearer if it explicitly state that only due to Adams policies this was possible and without that there would be no or less improvement of the state’s economic condition. For example, if this state is already developed state with huge population and hub of the companies , then , 5,000 new jobs and only 6 company headquarters will be considered as poor growth in the economies. Cleary there is no evidence and supporting information about the state which help this argument.
Second, the argument state that the recent polls shows that most of the respondent believes that the economy is likely to continue to improve if Adams id re-elected. This is again a very weak and unsupported claim as the argument does not demonstrate any correlation between the respondent and information about those respondent who took this poll. In fact , it is not at all clear that who were the respondent and what percentage of the state population has took this poll. For example , only few percentage of the population who are supporters of Adams will always vote in favour of Adams. Author fails consider various key factors and did not provided supporting information about this poll to convince and arrive to a conclusion.
Finally, The argument also state that Adams’s opponent disagree with the economic policies of Adams’s and will lead state to wrong direction. This argument could be considerably strengthen if the author clearly mentions all the relevant facts such as information and data which shows what economic policies of Zebulon will impact the state’s economy in a negative manner. However, this may be a case that if the Zebulon is disagree with the Adams’s decision then he believes that the Adams’s policies are not right and can be improved. Without convincing to these answers one is left with the impression that the claim is more of a wishful thinking rather than substantive evidence.
To recapitulate, the argument is flawed for above mention reasons and therefore unconvincing. It is essential to have a full knowledge of all the contributing factors in order to efficiently analyze the argument and arrive to a conclusion. Without considering other factors ,this argument remains unsubstantiated and open to debate.
