Hi all, apologies if this doesn't belong here - please feel free to remove mods if that's the case.
I'm currently in a bit of a quandary as I've been rejected for the three programs I've applied to so far. While I could apply for a few other programs, one of the things that's really holding me back is my lack of good references. For all three applications, I've used the same set of references (a more senior co-worker and one of my bosses) and they've started to express in no uncertain terms "reference fatigue", so I'm very hesitant to use them again in future applications for the 2019 season. I'd say these are the only two solid references I can really count on.
My issue is that I basically don't have a deep reference pool from which to pull from unlike most folks here. While I haven't necessarily burnt bridges with my old bosses, one already switched companies and has never replied to previous attempts to touch base. I also worked at an ad agency for 5 months and while I would normally call upon that reference, the circumstances surrounding my dismissal are kind of suspect (I basically got axed because I wasn't quite what they were looking for which is fair, but a few months after I left, they began sacking other people, and a lot of old coworkers left as a result of poor management). Another boss from an internship I worked at suddenly went into retirement, and I don't have her personal information...I've used her as a reference before but through her work email of course). At the end of the day, I have a handful of people I theoretically should be able to use as references for my MBA application but for mostly reasons beyond my control, I can't quite call upon them to do so.
Nearly every program I've looked at requires a reference, and I don't feel as comfortable delaying my plans for another year or so as I'm worried I'll lose motivation to pursue an MBA program (or any graduate program for that matter) once I'm neck deep into work again.
I guess I'm just looking for insights from those who've applied to multiple programs on how they've avoided reference fatigue (or if this is even a legitimate issue), and if anyone knows of any other program that doesn't require references (GMAT is fine). I don't want to seem like I am taking the easy way out by going into a program that doesn't require someone's good word, but I don't think there's any shame in seeing what else is out there and make a decision from there.
