Reaching out to admissions contacts (Bad GMAT)

Okay so I didn't do well at all on my GMAT (530). I've also been in contact with an admissions officer at the school of my choice for awhile now, asking him questions about the program, talking with him an the open house and various follow up questions regarding my application and the school. (Note: application not submitted yet)
He knows me and I mentioned that I was applying soon in an email with a quick question, however, once I saw how I did on the GMAT (soon after that exchange) I've been rethinking my strategy to apply (i.e. retake the GMAT). I was very surprised that I didn't do as well as I thought so this came as a real shock.
So my question is as follows; is it a poor strategy to follow up with this admissions officer who has been very helpful and inform him of why I haven't applied yet? I'm not vein in thinking that he's patiently awaiting my application but I have had interactions with him, both one on one and via email so I really want to know if I should reach out to him?
In my communication I was just going to be honest and tell him that I haven't applied yet because I didn't do as well as I was expecting on the GMAT and was conflicted on whether I should retake and miss this fall's deadline or just apply and hope the rest of my application is strong enough to admit me to the fall program.
Thanks everyone, this is my first post!
