You really have to approach the GMAT strategically.

I only scored 510 or so on my first GMATprep trial, but I was able to score 150 points more on the acutal GMAT by taking Kaplan GMAT program.

GMAT really only tests your knowledge on limited number of subjects...
However, it's really hard to diagnose your weakness if you study by yourself. Another thing with GMAT is that the test itself gives you a lot of pressure because of time limitation. Once you familiarize yourself with CATs, you will become less anxious during the exam (still there is much pressure during the exam even if you have taken CATs).

I strongly recommend that you take Manhathan's GMATprep course...

I have already taken Kaplan Prep Course twice. Once in person and once online and it did not raise my score, So I am not sure that taking in person course will be any more beneficial than self study unless may be getting personal tutor which could be pretty expensive.
