I am a reapplicant and have a few questions on my profile. In general, my profile was received favorably by the schools I applied to, but I was not accepted to them. I feel that I have improved my application in certain areas since I applied, so I will apply to the same schools and a couple of others this year.
Most of the essay questions have not changed substantially, so to what extent should my essays remain unchanged from last year? If the experiences I discuss have not changed and are still the central elements of my profile, to what extent do I need to re-write those essays? I know that schools compare initial applications with reapplicant applications. I don’t want to change my answers too drastically, but I also don’t want to make it look as though I haven’t put a lot of thought into my reapplication.

If your career goals made sense then you don't need to change those. That said, you should be delivering different messages in this application than the last application. As a rule of thumb, try to change / improve as much as you can. For instance, you don't want to use the same stories again because presumably you did things in the last year that were more impressive than you had previously done. If not, you probably won't get in this year either. Reach out if you want more specific advice as I would need to know your profile more to have a sense of what should be changed.

This is a good question and one that can't really be answered without assessing your application in detail. There could've been a variety of weaknesses (most likely in one or two areas) but without reviewing it, it's difficult to be accurate on what exactly you should change. For your essays in general, I would say that you should pretend as though you didn't apply before and assess your story, accomplishments, and experience to date. Would you answer the essay questions the same way?
