If I am, say, head of department, could one of my associates write a recommendation? Would the adcoms look at it with suspicion, assuming that because I'm still her boss I exerted pressure on her to write only good stuff about me? If any of you guys have been in such a situation, I'd like to hear some advice.

Bad idea...I would strongly suggest you DONT use a subordinate.

agree with riverripper. That is probably the worst reccomendation you can get.

Depending on schools, even peer recommendations are not viewed favorably.

Getting a subordinate reco is probably on par with getting a family member to write one...

The idea came from an interview with an adcom member, I think it was from IMD. But anyway, it does sound weird.
