Recent research indicates that increased consumption of fruits and vegetables by middle-aged people reduces their susceptibility to stroke in later years. The researchers speculate that this may be because fruits and vegetables are rich in folic acid. Low levels of folic acid are associated with high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that contributes to blocked arteries.

Which one of the following statements is most strongly supported by the information above?
(A) An increased risk of stroke is correlated with low levels of homocysteine.
(B) A decreased risk of stroke is correlated with increased levels of folic acid.
(C) An increased propensity for blocked arteries is correlated with decreased levels of homocysteine.
(D) A decreased propensity for blocked arteries is correlated with low levels of folic acid.
(E) Stroke is prevented by ingestion of folic acid in quantities sufficient to prevent a decline in the levels of homocysteine

arg
=vegies reduce stroke
=vegies inc folic acid
=low folic is related to high homo
=this contributes to blocked arteries

infer
ans (B) vergies decrease stroke by increasing folic which in turn lowers homo and contributes less to blocked arts.

Experts please give comments on my argument analysis:
increase fruits + vegtble => decrease stroke
because fruits + vegtble => increase folic acid
low folic acid => increase homo => stroke
==> decrease stroke => increase folic acid
=> Ans B is correct

According to powerscore , lets first see if it is argument or facts.
As there is no conclusion, therefore, it is a factual passage.
Now, let's jot down the facts:
1. More consumption of fruit and veggies; Fewer chances of strokes
2. Fewer strokes because fruit and veggies are rich in folic acid
3. Less Folic acid leads to more levels of homocy.
4. Homocy leads to blocked artery
Pre-phrase: Blocked artery leads to stroke. So if we eat more fruit then more folic acid will be in our body to keep the level of homocy less.

Now read the Stem: It is most supported/inference/conclusion type question . Therefore whatever is written in the passage is always true.

A.Opposite
B. Looks good.
C.Opposite
D. Keep
E. Nowhere mentioned about Prevention. Throw it.

From B & D, our pre-phrase is aligned with option B and Option D can be eliminated by negation technique.

- WRONG. Should have been decreased risk instead.

(B) A decreased risk of stroke is correlated with increased levels of folic acid. - CORRECT. More vegetables means more folic acid which eventually leads to lesser chances of stroke.

(C) An increased propensity for blocked arteries is correlated with decreased levels of homocysteine. - WRONG. Should have been decreased propensity.

(D) A decreased propensity for blocked arteries is correlated with low levels of folic acid. - WRONG. Should have been increased propensity.

(E) Stroke is prevented by ingestion of folic acid in quantities sufficient to prevent a decline in the levels of homocysteine. - WRONG. GOes against the theory. Should have been 'prevent a rise' instead.

Answer B.
